I emailed this woman, Nina, and she emailed me back last night. It seems that she does not want to part with her iguanas and really wants money to keep them all together. It seems that her personal problems, which she constantly talks about in her emails, are front in center in her life right now, and the iguanas are a distant second to them.

I again offered to help as we had found homes for 8-10 of her iguanas already but she wants to do the adoptions herself for her adoption fee rather than let someone else adopt out these animals.

She is worried about her standing in the rescue community because the various people she is staying with will not allow all her animals, and I tried to explain to her that there are other rescue groups that would gladly step in ONLY while she is experiencing problems and we could work WITH her to place any future animals and again, it seems to be about her.

I certainly understand being attached to your animals but I wonder about how concerned about these iguanas she is since some of them need medical care and she has no money, and she will not adopt them out to rescuers who can help them.

: I had heard about this lady through Midy at LZARR in Florida.

: Midy contacted someone in Scranton PA about this woman and the 20 iguanas that needed homes and Reptar, within a few hours, found 8-10 homes for them. He was also willing to work on the rest and/or take them in.

: However, after all the work, nothing. It sounds like she wants to keep them all together herself and not adopt them out.

: But in her situation (no home, no job) it might be best to find qualified homes and get the igs, especially those needing medical attention, in a stable environment.

: : Sorry - been busy and have not had time to post this since Kingsnake came back.
: : We need to make sure these igs find some homes. If you wanted to donate money
: : I would check the person out first though.

: : ---------------

:
: : I am writing to you from Orlando, FL. regarding a desperate situation in
: : Delaware. A young lady working to rescue iguanas has run into a situation
: : where she has to adopt out around 20 igs in various conditions and needs help.

: : I am one of the state coordinators for NIAD of FL. Our web site is at
: : http://hometown.aol.com//igreshi/index.html.

: : I am trying to get as much help in or around her area as possible. Here is
: : her letter:

: : From: Nina M Mancari

: : Reptile Rescue Rehabilitation & Adoption is in major danger. If I can't
: : find a place to relocate to in the next few days, I will have to somehow
: : farm out 20 igs (except Suki & Smokey) to various places and people, who
: : may or may not be iguana experts. I have about 8 iguanas that need
: : special care and medical attention.

: : Note, I am currently between temp assignments and am interviewing for
: : permanent work. I usually work as an admin. assistant and trainer in DE.

: : By the way I am not funded nor do I have a proper nonprofit or tax exempt
: : status because it costs mucho $ to get a lawyer to file the paperwork.
: : All food, housing, and veterinary expenses come out my pocket or out of
: : the few rescue fees of $25 that I get. In the last year I have spent well
: : over $2000 out of my pocket for the vet.

: : Currently I have at my 1 bedroom apartment: 22 iguanas, 1 spiny iguana,
: : 2 tokay geckos, 1 leopard gecko, 1 bearded dragon and about 10 Russain
: : Dwarf Hamsters. I rescue anything.

: : The major problem is that the igs have no where to go and several of them
: : (approx 8 igs) have special medical needs... also, I am the only ig
: : rescue contact person to take in igs from the DE SPCA, DE Humane
: : Society, Brandywine Zoo, The Academy of Natural Science (Phila PA),
: : Friskys' Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary, various veterinarians, various
: : wildlife rehabilitators, and various pet stores... .and not only in DE
: : but in PA, MD, Wash DC, part of NJ, and part of VA too.

: : Also currently, Friskys' Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary in Woodstock, MD
: : has an iguana for me to pickup at one of their volunteer's homes
: : (Baltimore MD). However, she doesn't do reptiles at all but will keep it
: : for me for 1 week only, unless I can place it before the week is out.

: : If anyone would like to help out, please donate any amount that you can
: : afford to the following snailmail address.:

: : Ms. Nina Mancari
: : c/o Dave Keen
: : 1408 Walnut Street #8
: : Wilmington, DE 19809

: :
: : The igs and I thank you very much for your contribution, it is much
: : appreciated.

: : God bless you for your help and kind thoughts.

: :
: : I have to admit it is very scary not to know where you are going to live
: : in the next couple days. I could possibly go somewhere but no igs are
: : allowed with the person who offered me a place to live because she fears
: : lizards and all reptiles of any type.

: : P.S. If anyone needs references regarding my rescue efforts, please let
: : me know, via email or phone. I am well know in DE, MD and PA. People have
: : met me and seen my igs on the IML and MAGGIK lists, plus others would
: : vouch for me. This is not a gimick, this is for real.

: : Sorry to be so verbose.

: : Please contact her quickly with any help you can provide for her.
: : Thank you,
