THE NEW YORK POST (New York) 05 August 99 Leapin' Lizards! It's B'klyn's Own Godzilla (Rocco Parascandola & Bill Hoffmann)
It was the night of the iguana in Bay Ridge.
Cops said yesterday they were astonished to find a 4-foot-long iguana roaming the neighborhood's streets.
The stunning discovery was made just before the stroke of midnight Tuesday, outside Poly Prep HS at Seventh Avenue and 92nd Street.
Minutes earlier, a panicked jogger spotted the slithery green lizard, weighing 8 pounds, moving along the moonlit sidewalk and called police.
Skeptical cops at first thought the reported sighting was a practical joke.
But when a squad car arrived and officers began searching the area with flashlights, the lizard bounded by like a miniature movie monster.
Approaching the leathery-skinned beast with caution, the officers grabbed it and gingerly placed it in the back of the squad car.
The feisty iguana furiously flicked its tongue in protest and whipped its two-foot tail, but otherwise did not resist arrest, police said.
The animal - which exists on insects, plants and an occasional mouse - is now residing at the Center for Animal Care and Control in Manhattan.
Despite the popular notion that it's not easy being green, veterinarians said the grassy-hued lizard was in excellent health. They could not determine its gender.
Police speculate the reptile might have been kept as a pet - but its owner dumped it on the street because of a new city law.
That regulation prohibits residents from keeping exotic animals - such as iguanas - as pets.
The law took effect Sunday - but it will not be enforced until next Monday.
