Most people on this forum know that HD and I are involved in iguana rescue. Currently, we have 7 iguanas in need of homes. The magic age when owners want to pitch them is 2 years (starting to get large and sexual maturity is happening). Now as we are all iguana owners, we all know how housing them (space) is a premium. And we all can agree that maintaining healthy iguanas is on going job. We call our contacts, we post messages, we BEG for people to please step forward and try to either adopt or foster care these iguanas. Sometimes it takes weeks and sometimes it takes months to find a home for just one iguana. This causes major frustration in our lives (knowing that iguanas can make wonderful pets).
When you see someone posting about breeding, all WE can think of is "Oh no...here we go again...need to find new homes...blah, blah, blah." Granted, Augusto isn't in the US, and we didn't realize this when reading his post. Augusto, I apologize (I was sitting next to HD when he posted). However, speaking for myself, I still am "anti-breeding iguanas." Augusto, might you think about adopting some iguanas in your area and using your outdoor cages for this? Or starting an iguana rescue?
How many people know someone (neighbor/friend/relative) who had a dog or cat and just let them have a litter so that they could "experience" the wonders of birth? How many people do we all know who, after having trouble finding homes for the kittens/puppies, ended up taking them to a local animal shelter? Now keep in mind, dogs and cats are more acceptable as pets, generally speaking, than reptiles (easier to find homes). Now take an animal that is not accepted by the masses and start breeding it. What becomes of the 30 - 40 baby iguanas that are born? They will probably find homes for the first 2 years of their life and then end up back in the rescue cycle. If we're having trouble finding homes for 7 iguanas in a large city....you get the picture?
So, fellow forum people, this is where HD and I come from when we get all worked up on the topic of breeding/hatching iguana eggs.
We now return you to your regularly boardcast program.
