: i know everything you would need to know about them. : -matt-
Well Matt that's very a interesting statement because I have been at this for 15 years and I most certainly do NOT know everything you would need to know about them. In fact, I learn something new just about every day.
I think Marisa made some fantastic points in her post. Unless his parents are agreeable to his getting one and realize their very important role in having one in their home, an iguana is not a good choice for him. In addition to supplying the money to properly care for it, including food, a new UV light every six months, heat sources, an approproate enclosure, vet care, increased electric bills, increased home heating bills and water bills (if they own their home) -most young children aren't able to handle the large lizard that their baby will quickly become. Since you know everything about iguanas, then you'll remember that iguana fecal matter contains salmonella and that young children especially are at higher risk to contract it. Special cleaning and sanitising methods must be strictly adheared to no matter what. Rain or shine, sick or healthy, school, vacations, little league, an iguana needs to be cared for on a daily basis -it is a huge commitment of time and money.
I would tell your friend to sit down with his parents and make sure that they understand what their part of getting an iguana will mean and that they make the decision as a family. It would be pretty bad if your friend got an iguana without his parents fully understanding and then when they figured out all the time and money involved make him give it up.
