Social Life of iguanas

Okay - all you rescuers, this is a question for you.

I understand that in the wild iguanas are social creatures. Mine, Ziggy, cannot free roam in the house because of my dogs.
Does he need, or should he have, a cage mate (female) for company. We cannot have him out for long periods of time simply because of the dogs. We do give him attention and he can see us, and he definitely watches us but is that social enough for him?

I want to do the best for Ziggy and make him happy but I am not sure just what is best. Ziggy I thought was 7 years old but it turns out he is probably 8 or 9 (he was bought in 1991 and was 7 months old then).

Please advise.
