Rob...first if you can throw a towel over this ig and contain it....if it is just a layer (& not deep) of that crud..I'd wash/ scrub it clean...a little blood can be expected. Get Betadine generic is povidine-iodine or sole at drug stores as hospital antiseptic ...generic is cheaper same product cheaper yet at large feed stores. And swab the betadine over the wound every night for a couplea weeks. Should take care of any infection, its healing and drying. You can go with ointments but will take what seems like an eternity to get scales healing. But any polysporin, neosporin, or triple anti/b ointment would be fine.I personally have better results with zinc oxide ointment (white like a cream tho)after the betadine in scrapes like this same healing and drying not to mention water proof so moisture doesn't get at it. Put the products on at night...less likely to rub it off. Might help!
