Sue, i would first rough up the surface that you want to paint if it is really that smooth...the paint will adhere better. My daughter used regular old interior house paint because we had a lot of it around but acrylics would work fine too. When the paint was completely dry I put 2 coats of polyurethane over it....keeps the paint looking fresh, gives some depth to the overall look, and makes it really easy to keep clean!! Give it a try!!
