I put up my original post re this on the IML. Ann Marsden gave a very helpful/informative reply to it. She gave me permission to post it here for you all.
Message: 19 Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 08:56:06 -0700 Hey, Glenda! Great table, thank you! One thing though - there is more than one type of goitrogen. One type can be countered by increasing iodine in the diet but the other type is still goitrogenic even if you give extra iodine.Cabbage goiter (that's all the cabbagy things, like kale, brusselsprouts, broccoli collards etc.) can be avoided with iodine supplementation. Legume goiter (peanuts, soybeans, peas) is listed as needing iodine 'therapy' not supplementation, so I assume it is more intractable. Brassica seed goiter, caused by eating the flowering partsof wild or domesticated brassicas **or rutabagas, radishes, daikons, turnips and that kind of stuff** _can't_ be treated with iodine. Ref: CRC Desk Reference For Nutrition, Carolyn D Berdanier, CRC Press(1998) pp 337-8 A varied diet should not be harmful, however. I don't see that adding kelp powder would be a problem, but then again I doubt if anybody has tested green iguanas for reactions to seaweed! Anne M
