In Reply to: I wasn't going to post about this again since it's not really my battle, but you went and made another good point... posted by Debbie on June 30, 1999 at 18:34:13:
I have said this a million times already.
I NO LONGER IMPORT.
I have never said i wasnt part of the problem.
I 100% agree. I was. as we all (ok most) of us are.
our opinions just differ on where we believe the biggest problem is. I think its in the lack of education of the average new herp owner. Granted if my magic all importers stopped. the problem would decrease for a certain amount of time. but then just like any other "in demand" reptile commercial breeders would breed them and they would again be available in large numbers. And when i say commercial believe me its VERY LARGE numbers of animals. It would raise the price which would be great...not many kids wanna fork over $50 bucks for an ig.
So my idea is this... if enough people are educated. less animals die (any kid can afford to replace a $10.00 ig). the less that die the less the demand is. it evens itself out. it has already happened with other reptiles.
Also i think that beardeds wont ever become as bad as igs. Even tho if you look hard enough you can buy them for $10.00 now...Quantity only. they are just too easy to keep alive and healthy. I know i'll get some hate mail on this one but....
I have this bearded... i have had him forever.
Nothing would make me part with him....he runs loose in my house (something i am still not too happy about) has his daily rituals....off the couch...to the window to bask... off the window to the kitchen to eat... then back to the window... then later he goes into the bathroom in the afternoon to bask under the skylight...the sun is in a different spot and his morning window no longer gets any....I occasionally give him crickets and superworms... mostly he east out of the cats bowl...(please dont ask...) and he drinks out of the dogs bowl.... he does get a few veggies here and there.. and he catches all kinds of stuff on his own...mostly bark scorpions (they are kinda bad here in FL) absolutely a "no problem" animal to keep. of course he goes outside on a regular basis he loves yellow cactus flowers and about anything else you give him time to catch and eat... but he never gets supplements...he doesnt get put away for hibernation..he just naturally finds a spot and sleeps for a few months(they do have a cool down period)and he isnt looked after like you would expect. But...I doubt you will find one in better health anywhere... 25 1/2 inches HUGE....never has had a twitch or a problem....any way i'll stop.
I have hatched thousands of beardeds and yes they can have there problems like any other lizards but they are just too easy to keep to become the ig problem..... anyway i kinda got off the point
US breeders will only let the price get so low then they wont produce as much... look at veiled chameleons. 3 years ago if you had 10,000 of them you could sell them without much trouble. the market got saturated and now you have to look for em to find them because breeders dont see them as a high sale animal. the price is even getting a little higher....and in a few years chameleons will get to be the "flavor of the month" again
and everyone will have them once again....
ok my fingers are tired...
