Like Kev said...never heard of a particular substrate being used for mating...for incubating eggs yeah!....I would stick with easiest/most common substrate for igs: indoor-outdoor carpet cut to fit, linoleum, newspaper (unprinted end rolls are best) and/or paper towels.
Here is a link on reproduction maybe something there will help ya out Kevin...lots of articles on mating, reproduction, incubating...etc.
