Also..........thanks to babyherp..........I will have the Diet section of my care page up soon. But I can re-post what she posted a long time ago! This is some good stuff!
Quick Look at Iguana Diet Reference:
Very Special thanks to BabyHerp for this wonderful information!
NO-NO's:
animal anything: protein, fat, dairy (except yogurt),perservatives, foods sprayed with chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. Do not pulverize their food. Food needs to be cut, chopped enough so that it is easier to digest and nutrients quickly absorbed.
AVOID OR LIMIT FOODS CONTAINING:
High oxalates
High phosphorus
High phytates
High purines
High tannins
High goitrogens
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glossary:
oxalates:
there are 15 different types of oxalates, found in virtually every plant food in varying concentrations. Calcium oxalates are of most concern due to the ability to bind to the calcium iguanas consume (plant or supplement) and rendering it useless, unabsorbable, and then eliminated from the body.
phytates:
found in virtually every plant food in varying concentrations. As with oxalates, phytates bind with calcium and inhibits its absorption. Best if *not* served with primary calcium source.
purines:
concentrations in foods responsible for crystallization of urea in kidney stones, high uric acid levels, gout. Mainly found in animal proteins but also in plant foods in elevated quantaties.
tannin:
chemical found in some plants that binds to protein and other minerals including iron and vitamin B12
goitrogens:
cruciferous (name derived from the cross, notch observed when stem is cut)plant foods that are thyroid antagonists. Consuming significant amounts of these types of foods aggravate thyroid hormone production of phosphorus- 2nd most abundant mineral in the body. It is in every cell. Used in the transfer of energy and to maintain acid- base balance. Sign of toxicity=low blood calcium.
IGUANAS:
require a HIGH FIBER, HIGH CALCIUM diet. plant foods with 2xs as much calcium than phosphorus (2:1 CA:P ratio) should be given per single food item or overall diet. A good reference tool to begin to recognize foods and their calcium:phosphorus content is the USDA Nutrient Database Every plant food consumed by humans is listed by the U.S. Dept of Agriculture. Pay particular attention to calcium, phosphorus ratios, also note fat & protein & fiber content to see if that food item is a good choice for your iguana/s.
THINGS THAT INHIBIT CALCIUM ABSORPTION:
1) High fiber
2) High oxalic acid (oxalates)
3) High phosphorus/phosphates
4) High phytic acid (phytates)
5) High goitrogenics
6) High doses of Vitamin C
