EVENING CHRONICLE (Newcastle, UK) 03 June 99 Iguana is bagged by couple - A one-way ticket to the seaside ends happily for abandoned reptile (Miles Starforth)
Animal lovers Claire and Tom Warren had an unexpected addition to their family when they visited a seaside attraction.
The couple came home from a reptile exhibition at the Sea Life Aquarium in Tynemouth with a 3ft iguana.
It had been abandoned at the centre by its owner who could no longer care for it.
Now Claire and Tom plan to build a tank at their Roker Avenue home in Whitley Bay to house the pet.
Body piercer Claire, 32, said: "We went along to have a look at the reptile exhibition - not to get an iguana.
"But when we saw it abandoned in a bag we thought we could give it a good home.
"We're keeping it in the bedroom at the minute in a fish tank but we're planning to build a special one for him."
"We've already got a snake, spiders and a few other creatures so I'm sure we'll be able to look after him."
The iguana was left at the aquarium during its first ever reptile weekend, featuring snakes and lizards from all over the world. Staff at the attraction could not believe it when the pair offered to take the iguana home.
Operations manager Lorraine Shield said: "This really was an amazing coincidence - the weekend was a great success and this just topped it off."
"I could not believe how many people have a genuine fear of reptiles but I think we went a long way towards easing some of those fears."
"We were able to show that snakes and lizards aren't anything to be scared of if they are treated with care and respect."
Another reptile weekend is planned for July and for more details contact the centre on (0191) 258 1031.
