Since alot of you seem to think it is the importers and the mass breeders that cause so many deaths of baby igs here is a suggestion..

since alot of you said you have never bought an ig
your cost will obviosly be low... BREED THEM!!!

you will learn things about your animals that you normally wouldnt.. it will give you a way better understanding of them and their life cycle...
and also... there is nothing cooler than looking at your eggs one day and seeing a little green head poking out of an egg lookiung back at you.

so... raise your little ig babies... and give them away since the idea of exchanging money for an ig is bad... give them to pet shops... one you like one that will listen to and accept your suggestions. Explain to them that to have your free igs they need to set them up your way.....
give them your phone number so they can call if they have questions...and believe me they will call... give the pet store a care sheet that you write... make copies so they can give out to your customers... put a vets number on your care sheet and your number so if the customer has a problem they can call you or the pet shop for good advice.

now... if any of you do this your end result should be this...
1) pet shops no longer have to have their igs shipped in which is of course an added stress to the animal.

2) you have built a trusting relationship with the pet shop. and at least now the igs will be better taken care of.

3) the consumer has valuable information because you have properly instructed the pet shop how to care for their igs. and your care sheet will also help them with detailed info on igs as well as a local vets # and yours.

4) you know alot more about igs...

---------------------------------------

I see all you guys wanting to make a difference for igs and thats great...no one wants to see animals die. but your not going to make a difference by emailing zoomed about their hot rocks or blasting people that if you listen.. can offer at least a little advice. breeding igs will probably only make a small difference because not enough people will do it.. it can be very time consuming and can cost a little. BUT... say you get one pet shop to listen to you..and its not that hard just dont go in a pet shop telling them all their ig products suck or that their igs are set up wrong...their probably not going to be to receptive even if you are going to give them free igs and info.

this does work. I have done it.
When i first started selling reptiles i was about 18 and was sick of seeing crap in pet shops. So i started offering my advice...and of course they all said "yeah ok thanks bye" but when i started giving them something.. like captive born garter snakes or corn snakes... all of the sudden they wanted to listen to what i had to say. you have to realize selling reptile for most pey shops is a losing battle. they get crappy animals and are forced to sell them...they hear people all day telling them how to do their jobs and they are bitter.

so anyway...I started doing this and realized not only could i now try to inform pet shops and they listened but i could trade my animals for theirs.
so... now my collection grew and their animals were getting better. The more herps i had the more i would try to breed and the more i could offer back to them. I have even went into shops that i was selling to and asked them.."hey can i set up your cage for this animal or that animal"
more times than not they were VERY happy to let me. usually having their employees watching and asking questions.

anyway from their i went into importing ...blah blah blah quit a few years ago and now own an ISP.
So...for those of you who say "i should have my importers license removed" well i no longer have one sorry...

So... here is my opinion on this....
Iguanas are going to continue to be a part of the pet shop market.
You cant save them all...and that sucks... but you may be able to start saving some in your area.
and that is more than "doing your part". By doing this you educate the pet shop owner... and the consumer...and also you gain alot of experience yourself.

think about it.
Kev
