Katie, have you been to Carmen's page on free-roaming habs? Here's a photo (sorry it's so big!! Only one I had that shows this well). Check out the page, below.

It may be too late to change this in your case, but as you can see, what I did was attach the fluorescent units to the underside of a shelf, which was then hung 14" above Carmen's shelf. The bulb itself is at around 12" from the shelf this way and 10" or so from her back.

I can then clip hood lamps with basking lights, night lites, or CHEs to the shelf as well.
