I was picking peas in my garden in south Louisiana Sunday and came upon a
young green iguana snacking in my snap beans. He seems to be relatively
healthy and has apparently been living wild for about the last year because
my next door neighbor said she saw it climbing her oak tree about that long
ago. But, we had an extremely mild winter and I am afraid that it would not
survive here once winter gets here again. Down here we have 80-100%
humidity all summer long and the temperature ranges from avg low 70s at
night to avg mid 90's during the day, perfect right? That doesn't last
forever.
So -- I took the scared thing captive and have been reading every piece of
info I can get my hands on. For now I am feeding dandilion greens, snap
beans and apple in the food processer, but he doesn't seem to be interested
in eating. (Would you given the circumstances?) He has also apparently had
run ins with some of the neighborhood cats because he seems genuinely
concerned when the cat comes around to check her new roomate out. I have
two incandescents for heat but UVB is a problem since I am not set up for
Iguana care. He is in a 55-gal long aquarium and I have tried to give him
branches to climb and water to laze in. He has made two BM's so apparently
he was eating prior to his incarceration.
I am not prepared for a life of devotion to something as high maintenance
as "Godzilla" as my wife has named him. But conversely, I am a naturalist
by profession and have a great disdain for the pet trade and consequently,
will not just give him away to a pet store or someone who doesn't have the
moxy required to keep this thing healthy and happy. In short, HELP!! I
don't know enough about his present condition to know if he has any
deficiencies or special needs at this point and I dont want him to wither
away on me if there is another acceptable alternative.
E-mail me back with any options or alternatives you can think of, please.
