as soon as your ig moves in with you, it's time!

what i've found works with smaller igs, is not to actually "clip" the nails, but to file them instead ... i used an emory board + just smoothed off the sharp little needle point at the end of each nail ... with smaller igs, a human nail clipper works just fine ~ what helped me when i was 1st starting is to take a little flashlight and shine it behind the nail ... you'll be able to see the vein in the nail and it'll give you a good idea of how short to snip ...

besides preventing scratches to *yourself* ~ have you ever seen your ig itch it's head with it's back leg??? they do that when they're shedding + it's itchy ... anyway ... iZ still has a scar from when HE did that and his nails were too sharp and he scratched his face open! (*geesh* it's ALWAYS something! ... *grin*)

another good reason to keep those nails short + rounded ~ (+ yes, another iZ story comin' ...) it's disgustingly *easy* for nails to get caught on something! iZ got a nail caught and ended up ripping it OUT ... OUCH! (have NO idea what it got caught on! it was up in his room ... + fortunately, it DID grow back after a LONG time ...)

another BIG reason for starting to do it as soon as the 2 of you hook up:
most igs do NOT like their toes to be touched! it's going to take some time + effort on your part just to get him adjusted to the feeling of you handling him that way and NOT freak out ... so to begin with, just work on that aspect of it ~ earning his trust!

it helps to just kinda gently 'play with' it's toes pretty much every time you are holding him ... just for a second or 2 at 1st if it really freaks him out! what you want to teach him is that it's nooooo big deal if the big scary human touches his toes, it's NOT gonna hurt ...

when iZ was smaller + growing inches over nite (well, it FELT like it! *grin*) , i'd do one foot/hand every nite ~ usually just filing ... but it got him used to the feeling and sometimes it's *still* easier to not try + do ALL the nails at once ...

*whew* ... ok ... i think i'm rambled out ...
*grin*
Bon.
