Hi Katie!
My iguana Cleo is a free roamer, tho I think that is a bad term, cuz she is more like a free couch potato. Or I guess I should say, shelf potato.
We put up shelves for her to hang out on, in an L shape along the front and side windows of our sunroom. This is Cleo's throne, and she never comes down except to go to the bathtub and do her dooty.
we have a basking lamp in the corner of the L, and she mostly stays there. I put her a nice rock and a shallow bowl of water in the corner, too. I also leave the window open when I can. She poked out of the screen once, so I cannot leave the window open without being here to watch her.
The hardest part for Cleo and me has been a night time place to sleep. If I were to do it over again, I would probably watch and wait for her to pick out her sleeping spot, and then set up some kind of heat to keep her warm. We used a black lightbulb in her clamp light, but that meant I had to change lightbulbs every night, (
from day light to night light)We have ended up with a "hammock bed" that hangs a little below & behind her shelf. It made of a towel right now, but since she is growing so fast, I'm going to have to make it more secure very soon. I thought I might hang it on a curtain rod, or a shower curtain rod.
But anyway, not she crawls into her bed whenever she's ready, and I put a heating pad on low in the sling part of the hammock. it's on low. Then for extra privacy, I put another towel over it all...(Does this make sense?) She now has her own little "cave" to hide in. She hangs out there on cloudy or stormy days too.
The bottom line is, if you set her up a warm place, keep her fed well and happy, she probably won't roam as much as you think, tho this is not an excuse to not ig-proof the room she will be staying in. Trust me, I learned that the hard way, looking behind the couch, and seeing that screen poked out, and knowing my Cleo was gone!!
Luckily we got her back,(another story), but, never underestimate their ability to get in trouble!! Or get free!!
Hope this ramble helps, if not, just go back and read what Harry's Dad said!!
