I use the Lysol disinfectant spray. On the back it lists various uses including "in pet areas" however at the bottom under precautionary statements it does say hazardous to humans and domestic animals. The reason I use it is because it is the antibacterial formula and lists salmonella as one of the bacterias it can kill.

Let me also clarify that I follow the directions to the letter. I DON'T use it in Mel's enclosure, or when she is close by. After she finishes roaming I place her back in the enclosure than go around to the areas she has been, I lightly spray those areas then keep the kids away while it dries for at least ten minutes. It is a full 24 hours ,normally, until Mel is let out again to roam. So I would think that any exposure she would have would be extremely limited. Actually it is keeping the kids off of the sprayed areas until the stuff dries and dissapates that concerns me more.

I have been doing this some time because of the samonella concern and have seen no ill effects. However, like I said I also think Mel's exposure is extremely limited. I guess it is a matter of weighing concerns. The concern of the salmonella danger due to the little ones I have playing on the floor weighed against the risks of exposing anyone in the house to chemicals. Keep in mind I have an "environmentally sensitive" child who breaks out when exposed to common soap and shampoo (you don't want see what cleansers do to him). Yet I have not seen any reaction after using the Lysol, probably due to the fact that it is allowed to dry and dissapate.

I appreciate any further info anyone can provide. I had heard than Pinesol was very bad, but this is the first I heard about the Lysol.

Kayo (curious but continuing cautiously)
