There are risks. However with proper handling and cleansing you can keep the baby and the igs.
I am due in six days. I am the primary caregiver for my female iguana Mel. In other words I feed, her, bathe her (she is trained to poop in the tub), love her. I always wash my hands and use Purel hand sanitizer before handling ANYTHING else after touching her.
In addition I have a 20 month old and a 9 year old. I let Mel roam a bit, always with me one step behind, after her daily bath. The nine year old is allowed to touch her and now the 20 month old is getting brave and touching her also (not allowed to touch her near the head and I keep between her and Mel's tail). I immediately sterlize their hands following any contact. When Mel goes back into her enclosure I walk around the house with Lysol antibacterial air freshner and spray the carpet wherever she has been. The tub is disinfected after every use and is almost exclusively used by Mel.
It may seem like a lot of extra work, but it is worth it. Since your igs are confined to one room you can illminate any direct contact between your new baby and them. The only contact left to worry about is indirect. As long as you sanitize you hands, anything that comes from that room, and any sink, counter or other place used to clean anything from that room you and your baby should be pretty safe. If you think about it, it is really nothing more than you should be doing already.
Hope this helps. And keep in mind those stories you hear are the exception and not the rule.
