I know where you're coming from on the "soapbox" argument, and given the same circumstances I would have gone to the hospital as well. I also know all too well that any snake gets huge with fear.
As far as how the snake and the man are, the snake got away from him(man was too scared to do anything but get away, so was the snake).
The man survived with some puctures, he may have gotten an antibiotic injection, and a bit more knowledge of what a rattlesnake looks like(due to the books).
