I found a horned toad in my yard.

Background story: a few days ago, Austin Texas had hail storms rage through parts of the city. The next day, my husband was walking the yard and found a very disresponsive horned toad. Poor thing wouldn't open it's eyes. It did occassionaly smack it's jaw. The temp was in the high 70's.

We put in the mulch bed last night to hide it better. This morning, it was still not responsive. It still wouldn't open it's eyes. I moved it to a more covered space. I don't know if this was involuntary, but it moved to be the sunlight.

This afternoon when I got home, it's eyes still wouldn't open. I think it might still be in hibernation or...worse...brain damaged from the hail storm.

I don't want the poor guy to die. It is going to freeze tonight as a cool front will pass through around midnight. I have put the little guy in a shoe box (closed it) and turned on a lamp next to it. I misted him and put him in a shallow water dish for about 15 minutes.

Is the little guy hibernating and was knocked out of a tree by the hail?

I plan to release him in more secure area if he makes it. We have too much yard chemicals for landscaping in the neighborhood. There is a lake preserve area 3 miles away where we will probably release him if he makes it.

I don't know what else to do. Please help. You can either respond here or e-mail me at andreagaspard at austin dot rr dot com
