In Reply to: Loss of Weight During Hibernation! posted by billshorneys on January 03, 2003 at 18:15:18:
:Does anyone know if there has been a study of the loss of weight of HL during hibernation? From the time they go into hibernation till the time they get out of hibernation how much weight on the average do they loose? In grams, or %. I know it would probably vary because of temperature, the species, location etc. Lester I know you have been raising HL for years, could you possibly shed some light on this question? Thanks

:The weight loss depends on the HL species. Typically, about 5% to 13% of total body mass, prior to hibernation, is lost. That is why it is so critical for the HLs to put on as much weight in fat storage as possible prior to hibernation. The winter conditions also have an effect on weight loss. If it is a "warm" winter, more body weight may be lost. Lester G. Milroy III
