:::My wife and I are planning a desert Southwest trip next spring with a very optimistic goal of observing all the species of Horned Lizards found in the US. I am asking for help in locating these lizards from people familiar with these lizards. I am not asking for your secret locations and this is NOT a collecting trip but any help would be appreciated.

:::Lawrence Erickson

:::The best place to view 4 species of US horned lizards within a 25 mile radius area is the Southwestern Research Station in Portal, Arizona. Phrynosoma hernandezi, P. modestum, P. solare, and P. cornutum are all in this area. You could contact Dr. Wade Sherbrooke at the center and see what can be arranged. The other 3 HL species can be seen in other areas like Nevada and California at wildlife reserves. Lester G. Milroy III

:Lester,
:Thanks for your response, this is exactly the kind of info. I was looking for. Re: P. hernandezi, is this now recognized as its own species or is it subspecific for P. douglassi hernandezi? My references may very well be outdated.

:Lawrence

:P. hernandezi is the new designator for the Shorthorned Lizards and 4 subspecies. P. douglasi is the designator for the Pygmy Shorthorned Lizard. DNA work was completed by Kelly Green (Zamudio) and was compelling to redesignate the division. Lester G. Milroy III
