::How long do you think HL's hibernate? I feel like my baby hasn't grown much in the 5 weeks I've had him. After about 3 days of hibernating, I get nervous and turn on his light so he will come out and eat (which is getting hard to feed him cuz he still won't eat harvesters and my backyard ants are really dwindling) I'm wondering how long they CAN go without food, especially if they are only about 7 weeks old. Thanks, Lisa
::Lisa, HLs will hibernate for up to 5 months depending on the weather. You will not notice much growth in the first few months after they hatch. The growth rate is about .02 - .04 mm per day, if the proper diet is followed and the conditions are favorable. In the wild, only about 50% of hatchlings survive into the first hibernation. You are working the odds with attempting to raise a hatchling. Keep the food available to meet the need. If your ants are declining in your yard, which they will because they hibernate also, you need to mail order ant supplies. Keep the ants in the refridgerator and the supply will last for an ample amount of time. Lester G. Milroy III

Thanks Mr. Milroy, I appreciate your help. Do you have any ideas on how to get him to eat the harvesters? He loves any smaller ants, and will wrestle (and eat) baby crickets, which are bigger than the harvesters. I only give him crickets when we've gone a few days with rain and I can't get backyard ants. I think he is afraid of the harvesters. I put a harvester in there every day and then take it out because he will not eat it. I've tried to get smaller mail order ants, but no one has them. Also, do HL continue to grow while they are hibernating. Thanks again, Lisa
