:If I go collect this "wash sand" do I need to purify it in any way before putting in the HL's tank? I have heard of baking substrate and even putting it in a plastic bag in the sun for a few days. Is this necessary?

:The best thing to do is sift the sand to remove large materials that are not necessary in the enclosure. You can add rock and wood pieces to provide shade. You can bake the sand, if you want, but I have not found it necessary. As you sift the sand, inspect it for bugs and such. Lester G. Milroy III
