:Amy, the horned lizard's body is flatened for several reasons. One reason is that when they bury themselves, they sort of arch their backs as they bury and that creates a hollowed cavity underneath themselves. Horned lizards breath "downwards." Their body inflates underneath themselves into this hollow cavity. Lester G. Milroy III
