:The big ugly red ants in Oklahoma and Texas are Pogonomyrmex barbatus or P. bicolor or P. occidentalis or could be P. comanche just to name a few. Exact ID as to species could be done at your nearest University Entomology lab. HLs do eat these harvester ants with out a problem. They are native species to Oklahoma anad Texas. Desert HLs will eat them without problems.

You can try your "ant culturing." Queen ants are very picky on where they establish new nests. Did you know that only 1 out of every 100 new queen ants actuall survive to establish active nests? And only 1 in 20 nests survive past 2 years? Just a little trivia. Lester G. Milroy III
