regal horned lizard: need advice

A relative recently acquired a regal horned lizard in AZ. After 5 days, the 3inch critter has not eaten any harvester ants or small crickets. No one wants to see the animal hurt. How long should the attempt at feeding continue feed before releasing? The lizard will drink droplets of water, and has "grabbed" at one ant, but appeared to spit it back out. I read that these guys can go for a couple of weeks with no food. Is this true? (The temp is right, he gets some sun, sand substrate...) Please advise asap. {I was told that it is legal to have up to 4 of these WC lizzies (w/a hunting lic.) -- true?}
