The maximum size should not be a deciding factor in this case. You would be looking at the wrong trait to decide what is best for you. You have to look at captive bred availability, willingness to feed and what foods are best. Sadly, too many people choose pets for the wrong reasons (colorful, size, cuteness) and it is the animal that will ultimately suffer.
I do not believe hognoses make good pets as they require knowledge of diverse feeding techniques that may require some barbaric looking procedures. Many people do not have the experience (or willingness) to deal with non-feeding hognoses, winter lethargy and parasite problems commonly associated with hognoses. Corn snakes make an excellent first snake, nothing wrong with those. If you must, I only recommend a Western.
