I used mahogany to build a vivarium but most tend to use melamine or the like, it all depends on what you want it to look like and your carpentry skills do make a difference, the great thing about building your own is you can design it any way you want to fit it into your available space, remember it doesnt have to be a box it can be multi level and curved etc.
the main thing to remember is ease of cleaning you have to be able to work inside quickly and easily and still have it secure because hoggies are amazing escape artists.

:- Durable
:- Integrated lighting (or easily added)
:- Integrated heating (or easily added)
:- Attractive for display in a home
:I believe 36"WX20"D would be size appropriate.
