When an animal uses it's fat reserve it stores fat in the liver.It is possible that fatty liver is normal in reptiles.I think a good project would be to collect dor's and check for fatty liver throughout the season and see if it is a normal occurrence after brumation or gestation. Fatty liver is reversible if the animal starts to eat again. Some vets have noted hepatic lipidosis in reptiles but it may be secondary to the real cause of death. But in captive obese animals I would think fatty liver could be a problem if the animal goes off feed for a long period of time and has nothing to do with type of food.
