My Western and Mexican hogs rarely use a hide box (my babies do, but adults don't seem to like to). I give them a deep substrate of Aspen shavings and they burrow around to their heart's content.
I remember reading Platt's study on W.Hogs in Kansas and him noticing that he very rarely found hogs under any sort of surface object (trash, boards, rocks, etc). Maybe they would use a toilet paper/paper towel tube for hiding?
