When I lived in SC, many of the easterns there were melanistic and showed similar color changes. These snakes from this area of Texas are never jet black (at least, I have never seen a melanistic one). Instead, they are just this sooty gray color without very much yellow at all. I have never seen a juvie from the area. Could be a good photo project for the spring!
