In Reply to: Eastern Hog Feeding questions. Rodent diet detrimental? posted by primevalbeauty on November 14, 2002 at 21:06:49:
Just to throw in my experience with a 10 year-old CB southern hognose: In the 9+ years I've had him, he's eaten nothing but mice (refuses rat pinks). At 125 grams, he tackles anything from pinkies up to large adult-sized mice. I like to offer (small) adult mice for the presumed calcium availability.
A sample size of one tells me essentially zero regarding the efficacy of a rodent diet. But I sure like not having to deal with toads.
:I was wondering how many eastern hog keepers out there have kept them on strict rodent diets. For how long and have any of you noticed any ill effects. Most of my easterns feed well on rat pups but I'm wondering whether their specialized diet of toads and frogs versus rodents will cause any health problems in the long run. Also looking for good hog contacts for trades in info or specimens.
:Thanx,
:Steve
