Aspen is the only substrate I've used with my gila and I have no complaints so far. A friend of mine experimented with several substrates and ended up using aspen shavings as well. I don't feed him on the aspen (not worth the risk of ingesting substrate)
I believe Dr. Seward's book recommends sani-chips (which is a aspen product).
