Gilas are not like other lizards. I would say study everything you can. Definitely pick up a copy of Dr. Seward's book and make sure a Gila is something you really want. They can live 20+ years....are you willing to take on the venomous responsibility? These are not animals you can get and pawn off to a friend or pet shop if you tire of them. I have bred chameleons and beardies for 7+ years and I now have my first Gila and I am nowhere near being an experienced keeper with them. One thing you really need is common sense. They are not animals that like to be handled. It's not good for their health or yours. If you are 100% sure you really need one, study everything and maybe even talk to Dr. Seward before getting one.
