......that was my walking stick, I set it down, he climbed over it. Believe me, I had more concern for his "in the wild" welfare than the state agency that claimed they were protecting them. The fellow that took the photo would just step into the path of the lizard, the lizard then would change his course. My arm extended stance was to try and prevent him from crawling behind me before we could get the shot. Gilas are strictly "HANDS OFF" for the general public throughout their entire range.
