Substrate and nail (claw?) length...

How will substrate choice affect nail length? Will an enclosure with sand as a substrate keep the nails on my Gila shorter than would be expected with an aspen substrate? Or, should I expect the nails to get long regardless of substrate?
Is it ever necessary to trim the nails on a Gila? If so, how? Thanks!
