You can apply for a permit to collect in Mexico, I believe it's around $1000 now. You may collect 16 specimens of the species specified on the permit. If you're not granted a permit, there is no gaurntee that you'll be refunded. I would think that an institution would be more apt to be granted a permit than an individual. If I'm incorrect regarding this process, someone please fill me in...

: can gilas or beardeds be imported from mexico with a cites permit, while i am not an advocate of wild caught specimens, the initial investment is beyond what i can justify to my wife. when on a trip (years ago) there were kids selling them for meat, sad but true, so i wondered if there were legal avenues to import a specimen or a pair, thanks (dont beat me up too badly) scot
