:I brought home a bearded dragon today that had his leg chewed off up to the elbow. They have been putting iodine on it and he is eating very well and gets around pretty good. The vet doesn't think that I can do much else for him. But I know from reading posts on Kingsnake that you guys have good input. Can anyone think of anything that I can do to keep him healthy and happy while he is healing? I brought him home today and he has rocks to bask on and I put paper towel on the floor of his cage so nothing will stick in his owie while it is healing.

I would suggest to change your antiseptic to a product called: Nu Skin which is a liquid bandage with antiseptic components. It will keep the wound clean and dry during the healing process. This is also effective for snout-bashing lizards such as basilisks and waterdragons. Hopefully, the "iodine" that you are refering to is Betadine. Betadine will work too, but may have to be applied more often. As long as no infections develop, the bearded dragon should do well. Bearded dragons have a pretty good immune system. Most importantly, keep the temperatures in the correct range (to optimize the metabolism) & follow all cultural practices that apply toward keeping bearded dragons.
