My opinion is that in a captive situation, mom doesn't always know whats best. As long as you are really careful not to rip the shell, I've found it does no harm. The weak spots that are left from where the shells were stuck together will heal after a few days. The idea is that once they are all separate, there is less chance of a bad egg spoiling the ones it's connected to. Also, the quicker you get to them after they've been laid, the less stuck together they will be.
