I agree. This is just population biology common sense. These animals have an important niche in their natural habitat. They provide a key role in the checks and balances system of the environment. Timber rattlesnakes are in even worse shape (especially the northern populations), because of their need for site specific hibernation, their EXTREMELY LOW reproductive rates, killing/overcollecting and habitat destruction. Rattlesnakes are of upmost importance in keeping rodent populations to a manageable size. Crop and property destruction by rodents, as well as, the rampant spread of rodent born disease (hanta, etc..) are just a couple of reasons why these animals are so very important.
