Hypothetical situation:
State X prohibits the keeping as pets of any snake naturally occuring in that state, as does State Y. Let's say that each state has one naturally occuring snake that the other doesn't, but they're in the same genus. By making a hybrid of the two species, people in each state could keep/breed them.
I personally prefer reptiles that look "wild," i.e. no morphs, hybrids, etc.
