Just an opinion, but corns are easy to care for and they come in many colors- a great starter snake. Be aware that juvenile snakes go through a "everything wants to eat me" stage and can be a little defensive until they gain some size. A hatchling corn can't even break the skin so there's no worry if they try to bite (it's kind of cute at times!). Most of the North American rat snakes are easy to keep and offer a lot of variety. I've found them to be less nervous than Kings and Milks.
If you want something a little different, look into the African House Snake. They stay small (2-3 feet) and have a pleasant personality. I've never had one refuse a meal! They really act like a little python more so than a colubrid.
I've had a couple of Captive Bred Ball Pythons and both went on feeding strikes at times. One had to be switched back to live gerbils after 4 months of no feeding response.
I haven't had Rosy Boas- but I've heard good things about them.
Good Luck!
