A number of snakes will eat small prey items live. If it isn't struggling enough to warrant the energy to wrap it or subdue it, they just eat it. Sounds like that ball python should be eating at least mice if it's two years old. I understand being concerned about it getting obese- but just feed larger prey items less often. You might be able to switch it to freshly killed mice and then to frozen/thawed. I'd try a f/t fuzzy then move up to a f/t mouse.
