Well, wild snakes have eaten babies, I've seen two news stories in the last 2 years, both involved African Rock pythons. I have NEVER heard of a captive snake in the USA killing (or eating) a baby. This is probably because most people with babies are smart enough to keep their snakes in cages in a seperate room. However, a Pomerianian (tiny dog) did kill a baby a few years back. Go figure, people shouldn't keep those dangerous animals in their houses. :).
There's also a folktale that cats will suck the breath out of babies. Most folktales aren't kind to pets.
By the way, I've heard a statistic for vending machine deaths but it didn't say if it was for the US or the world. The statistic was 10 deaths a year. That's a lot compared to 3 snake related deaths a year on average in the US, but not much compared to 40,000 snake related fatalities worldwide.
