all this week, the National Geographic Channel is running '5 Days of Snakes'. i was wondering if anybody saw the 1st show(last night)??? 2 things that disturbed me greatly: 1. the 2 little boys that almost picked up a Gaboon Viper in their garage!! what is happening when someone lets a snake like that get away from them??? i can visualize a future end to all reptile shows in the country, venomous and non-venomous!!! 2. the people who have these 'rattlesnake roundups' and end up mass-slaughtering countless snakes just to make them into boots, belts and hatbands!!! i could almost understand the farmers and ranchers wanting to 'thin out' the population a bit to protect their herds of cattle. hunters are allowed close to where i live to 'thin out' the deer because they cause so many accidents on the road, but COME ON!!! in the case of the rattlesnakes, however, being made a public spectacle is more important than protection. this was made apparent when the guy got in the sleeping bag and numerous snakes were put in the bag with him. it might be entertaining for some, but it's really just asking for trouble. especially the guys walking around barefooted and lightly stepping on them! if you're handling a snake and you're not careful and get bitten, that's one thing. if you deliberately take a chance without regard to safety(going barefoot), that's an entirely different matter! well, sorry to be so long-winded and i hope i didn't offend anybody. just thought i'd share this.

thanks,
greg
