Personally, my guess is that these animals are not true hunters. They do not hunt all the time. Most carnivores, for example, are constantly hunting. From what I see, since snakes are more the kind of animals that eat when a meal comes along being ectotherms is more conducive to their lifestyle. They do not have to eat as much. Those that do need to eat more have a higher metabolism (IE Nerodia, Thamnophis). That appears to be my take on it. That is my take on it. Snakes may search for food but they do not seem to be the hunters that any carnivorus mammal is. Also, at their size and being warmblooded, I doubt they would live as long as they would. Think of mammals that are their size(not a truly feasible comparison, but you get the idea). Andy
