I don't like any kind of sand for snakes. It doesn't absorb liquid, so the urates just seep down to the bottom (so I'm told), so the tank gets smelly fast. With larger snakes, the sand grains can get up underneath their belly scales and irritate the skin. Plus, if the snake needs any sort of humidity, sand isn't going to help at all. Calcium sand is worthless - people have had lizards die from swallowing cacli-sand, just like what would happen if they swallowed regular sand (ie, it doesn't digest). Except calcium sand grains are larger than regular sand, and might not pass as well.
