So, what, you don't think that garters are "real" snakes? They're absolutely beautiful animals, and can make very good starter snakes. I guess if they're not "real" or "macho" enough, those endangered San Francisco garters can just go eat their worms and die.

BTW, to the poster: I think you should let your ringneck go... they're fairly fragile and are small enough to make feeding difficult. I kept one overnight, and it died the next morning. If you like smaller snakes, I would try a DeKay's snake or a garter/ribbon snake. All of those will eat fish, worms, and probably small salamanders as well. Good luck!
